About the Author

Shalena D.I.V.A. is an author, speaker, and certified master life and business coach who has shown thousands of women how to discover, invest, value and appreciate their God-given gifts and talents. She grew up in a rough neighborhood in South Philadelphia that was plagued by violence. She saw first-hand how drugs can destroy communities and families, especially her own. She observed her father go from being a beautiful black man and loving father to an enraged, drug fueled person who tried to kill her mother one night. After years of IV drug use, her father became infected with HIV and eventually lost his battle with AIDS. Her stepfather sold drugs throughout most of her childhood which always put her family directly into harm's way. One time, her stepfather was kidnapped by a rival drug gang right before her eyes. They held her and her little brother at gunpoint during the assault. She was 12 years old and her brother was 3 years old at the time. Eventually her stepfather was taken down by Federal agents and sent to prison for 9 years. This shattered her family life and took a heavy toll upon her little brother. With so much negativity all around her and the lack of positive role models, Shalena D.I.V.A. could've given up on her dreams of graduating from high school and becoming the first person in her family to attend college. Yet, somewhere deep within she found the courage to hold on to her dreams. She was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania and awarded the prestigious Philadelphia Mayor's Scholarship, a four year scholarship. However, she attended Duke University instead where she was awarded The McGaughey Higgins Scholarship, also a four year scholarship. She earned a degree in Political Science and graduated from Duke in 2001. Upon graduating from Duke, Shalena D.I.V.A. worked for a Fortune 500 company until she left this high paying job in March of 2006. She wanted to put more energy into empowerment writing--her true passion! In May of 2010, after seeing the need for a comprehensive online resource for young women of color, Shalena D.I.V.A. created www.shalenadiva.com, an educational, enlightening, and entertaining website that serves as a platform for women to better their lives and build their businesses. It also addresses issues such as health, self-esteem, mental health, financial literacy, to name a few. She also founded the Shalena D.I.V.A. Corporation in 2010 to provide empowerment products and services.

Dear Shalena,

i contacted you in october 2012. i was very sad because of my past failures and mistakes. i dont know what led me to writing you a letter, but i did. when you replied and directed me to reading your book, i thought that all you were trying to do was get me to spend some money...i was wrong! you were trying to give me the tools i need to become a D.I.V.A as well!

i purchased the book from amazon in June and read it after seeing the positive reviews. everyday you had another great thing to share! Shalena, this book is amazing. I've always been the type to run to my friends with my problems, but i've learned that they cannot always help me, and that sometimes they may have ulterior motives. Sometimes our friends don't even know how to help us. But you reaffirmed in me that i am capable of being my own friend and helping myself!! I now have 4 new friends that I didn't know I had!

I just wanted to publicly say thank you Shalena for this book. I hope this will not be your last. You make young girls like me truly believe that anything is possible. I've been following your Facebook page and i have seen your progression and i am so proud of you.

take care and god bless you Shalena!

The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you discover your purpose (Mark Twain)!!! U was lost, but I've found my way through with guidance of "Fire Your Friends". Before picking up this book my mind was all over the place. I wanted to be successful and knew what it looked like in my eyes but didnt know what it CONSISTED OF for me. I wanted to move into "my field" because I wasn't doing what I enjoy in my well paid job (which is why I felt unfulfilled). However, I couldn't verbalize what I really wanted to do. Again, I knew what it looked like, but didn't know what it CONSISTED OF for me. While reading the book it, completing the tasks directed me to an AHA moment! The lightbulb went off and now I know what my success story CONSISTS OF for me! ,I've never felt more sure of my direction. So, after reading this book I can say I've Found my PURPOSE and I'm Ready to INVEST in Me! It's a definite MUST READ. Find your way, find YOUR PURPOSE and start INVESTING in YOU!

This book is such a great investment! I had a few questionable relationships in my life, and I finished this book with a clear understanding of how to make tough but much needed decisions about who was in my space. I also learned one of the best lessons in life which is to become more familiar, loving, and supportive towards the person who looks back at me in the mirror. How great is that?! There are some awesome qualities, gifts, and talents on the inside of me, and this book encouraged me to see the beauty in all of it. Thanks to Shalena D.I.V.A. for sharing her story which helped me to continue writing mine.

This is not what I was looking for at all. It's a pretty religious book and I was hoping to gift it to someone who isn't too religious.

I must say I read this book because someone else told me it was good and I should check it out. I had NO IDEA what I was in store for. I used to hold myself "emotionally hostage" to relationships with family and friends. This book taught me to see those relationships differently. I didn't have to get rid of everyone but I did set boundaries so I wouldn't be held back by them.

I also had to set boundaries with myself. Yep, myself! Who would have thought I was holding myself back? This book was eye opening. I will be gifting it to some wonder people for Christmas and birthdays this year!

This book and the lessons contained within were a part of the Passion Academy that I was so blessed to be a part of! The lessons were definitely eye openers for me. I felt like an onion....many layers that needed to be peeled back. Yes, just like peeling the onion, there were many tears in the process but it was well worth it. Trust and believe the book is worth every penny especially as it related to saving your life! You will certainly become the CEO of your life. A must read and a great gift for yourself or someone else. Treat yourself today! You won't be sorry that you did!

Shalena really is an inspirational writer and woman. Love her book, Fire Your Friends. I especially like the way she introduces new friends to help you on your path to being a better, healthier and happier "You". Shalena puts herself out there and tells her story to help you understand how to let go, deal with the past , move on, and to be true to yourself so you can be all that you are meant to be. I will be reading it more than once and referring back to it from time to time I'm sure. A MUST READ! Thanks Shalena!
